Welcome! We are always updating our website. Check often to see exciting things happening.MISSION STATEMENT
The Newfoundland & Labrador Brain Injury Association is a non-profit advocacy organization which strives to improve the quality of life of survivors, their families and friends;
Our goals include helping to identify the needs of survivors, their families and friends. Enhancing access to quality care and services. Improving public awareness of brain injury through education.
History In November 1984, a committee for the brain injured was formed to deal with the many brain injured people who were put in nursing homes and the Waterford Hospital. At this time, community supports were inadequate to deal with the complex array of neurological and psychiatric difficulties experienced by brain injury survivors. Discharge planning was relatively non-existent and there were no facilities for our patients. Major service gaps continue even today and the special needs of this population continue to be ignored. Long-term support for brain injury survivors, once they are discharged from the hospital and post acute programs (which often are not located in their home community) is critical, and is the area of greatest service deficiencies. The coordination of support services is poor and fragmented once the survivor is discharged form the hospital environment. When the physical rehabilitation process is complete, families are left to patch together support services from a variety of sources (development service agencies, vocational rehabilitation, private providers, nursing homes)
